Volunteers
Qualities of a VolunteerGenerosity
Giving of your time is a generous gift of the heart. Be engaged with the sincere and genuine desire to help others.
Communication
An appreciation of oneās own communication style is important. Some patients like visits; others love to sit in stillness and be quiet. You have to be comfortable in either situation. Volunteers need to know when to talk and when to listen andĀ to always allow the patient to direct the visit.
Initiative
Look to the patient to get the pattern of interaction. A phone call or a brief visit may be all that the patient needs. A conversation where you seem to be doing all the talking may indicate that it is time to end the visit, offer to end the interaction.
Dependability
To people whose lives are subject to stress and change, knowing they can count on someone is essential. Our patients come to rely on you and enjoy your visits. Promise only what you know you can commit to.
Flexibility
Things can happen rapidly. The ability to āgo with the flowā when things donāt go exactly as you planned is important.
